My First John Lennon Moment

By Erik | June 23, 2008

Many of you have probably already heard, but it still gets to me that George Carlin passed away. This is the first time I’ve actually felt a bit of sadness at the death of an entertainer, but George Carlin was the greatest stand-up comedian I’ve ever heard. I remember listening to cassette tapes, then CDs and eventually downloading his routines over the ol’ Napster when it was free as the wind blows. Carlin was with me when I was an awkward teenager, a headstrong college student, a jaded musician and even now as an industrious photographer. No matter what point in my life, he spoke to me. The man was just as much a philosopher and political activist as he was a stand-up comedian.

And to say that he was one of my biggest influences would be nothing short of accurate. Looking at my past screenplays you can see me attempt his sarcastic, snarky, outside the box humor. Characters like Andrew in The Devil’s Dictionary and Floze in Confab . In fact right now in Microcosm: the Zaki character is my feeble attempt to capture my inner Carlin.

Since Microcosm is foremost on my mind, here’s a selection from the script to show you just how much George Carlin affected me:

ZAKI
Riddle me this, have either of you ever heard of a clambake?

MIKEL
A what?

ZAKI
Exactly, exactly! We’ve got sausage party, link fest, and a host of other euphemisms for a male dominated party, but where are these female dominated parties? If there’s a wang out hang out happening, there’s gotta be a clambake somewhere!

IRELAND
Clambake?

ZAKI
Someone has to standardize the terminology.

MIKEL
The terminology of this thing that doesn’t exist.

ZAKI
It must exist! Just more of the feminine mystique! Like the whole obsession with chocolate and the matching underwear problem!

RONNIE
Matching underwear problem?

MIKEL
The matching underwear problem.

ZAKI
Allow me to explain, as post-pubescent boys our concept of sex comes from porn, in which women wear matching underwear.

IRELAND
And the problem?

ZAKI
It is not true, never been true. Women do not match their underwear.

I’m not crying or anything, but I am sad today. Probably the saddest I’ve been in a long time.
