Reports From The Central Wisconsin Film Festival

By Erik | November 8, 2008

Luke Cieslewicz (Mikel) was one of many Nuns representing out at the first screening of the Central Wisconsin Film Festival, he wrote up a little something about the whole experience on the boards and here it is, reposted for the front page for all of you to see:

[T]he festival was really fun. All the animated shorts (there were 3) were done by the same guy and you could definitely tell. At lease the first two were very similar. The third was kind of creepy though probably the best one, since it actually matched up with what the song was about. The second one was kind of neat, though, as things on screen would morph into other things, but there was no real rhyme or reason to it. Tim’s short about Tesla was very fun and looked really good. The black and white really came across nicely. There was this like, thirty minute documentary that was good about getting a lot of facts out there, but didn’t really have a good through-line or developed characters. It was almost more of a glorified news package.

Brothers looked really nice. It’s almost like they had a real crew and top of the line equipment to shoot it with!  It was interesting how the two longer narrative films were so different. Brothers had very little dialogue and depended a lot on images to give their message, whereas Microcosm is, of course, more dialogue and character driven.

The talkback afterward was fun. It was cool being a movie star for one night.  They asked a lot of the expected questions (how long did you work on this, what other festivals will you go to, etc..) and a couple of unexpected ones (how many slices of pizza did you guys have to eat?). Overall I think it was a very cool experience. It will probably be similar to 2006, with us and the Perkins duking it out for the audience choice award, though the documentary will probably get some support just for the issues it talked about. Tonight should be fun. Hopefully the weather will be better, though I’m not sure how many people that deterred last night.

Having never been at anything like the Central Wisconsin Film Festival before, it was good to see people that had no relation or any sort of investment in the movie voluntarily sit and watch it, give some feedback and tell us what they thought.
