A Look Back at Microcosm: Part 1

In the coming days before Microcosm becomes streaming for free here at Stop That Nun, we’ll be posting retrospectives. As a huge web 2.0 guy, I really wanted us to be transparent and open to the public since it’s so easy these days. Between scripts, location scouting photos, dailies and everything else, we tried to make this production as transparent as possible. I wanted a sort of “through the looking glass” type of feel to this production, a chance for this interested in more than what the average special features of a DVD would give someone on how a film goes from an idea, to a script, to shooting, to editing to, to being released. To do that in real time, as it’s happening, that was almost impossible pre-web 2.0 and definitely impossible before video on the web.
So as we reach the final stage of Microcosm, giving it to all of you and letting it rest, we’ll be doing regular updates on the site looking back at all of this material and bring it all together for anyone interested in seeing just how this process comes together. All in one place. Let’s get started with the first thing released every: the location scouting.
That’s right, before we even made a draft of the script public, I was looking around Wausau, Wisconsin for locations in Microcosm. As has been mentioned numerous times, Microcosm was going to be a “Wisconsin” film, and really not just Wisconsin, but a Wausau film. I wanted to start putting real places in my head as I worked on the scenes that I had written. While There was a little bit of that going on in the back of my head, to solidify it really helped me take advantage of the local flavor. Even if some locations ended up moving from where I originally thought they would be, it was still a great experience.
So here’s a few photos from that excursion, plus a video I took with my phone of downtown Wausau.
