A Look Back at Microcosm: Part 2

By Erik | October 30, 2009

In continuing a look at all the web 2.0 stuff we did for Microcosm that you just won’t see on any other film that I’m aware of, the script was public very early. While I had sent out previous drafts to friends for feedback, the first public draft was the fourth and we ended up shooting the seventh. But moreover, before I had one crew member, location or dollar in the budget, I had already put the script up.

I posted the first public draft on an old blog of mine. As I’ve searched for a home on the internet I went from a diary type blog, to a blog about living Wausau over on Citizen Wausau to my current, professional blog. The first draft to appear on Stop That Nun was the sixth draft, and it went along side the auditions announcement.

This is probably a great time to talk about where the script came from to begin with.  In early 2007, Stop That Nun was recruited by The University of Stevens Point’s student television station to give their students more opportunities.  The station largely only had news based shows, so a narrative comedy would be a great bit of diversity.  Unfortunately, the support required for a full run of six television episodes never came together.  But, because during writing we were so high on the idea, I had started writing, by myself, a prequel to the series as a short film.  Once the show had fallen to shambles, I decided to revisit the script with a fresh take that wasn’t tied to any other intellectual property.  The result was the the third draft of Microcosm, which was now an entirely original script in terms of characters and setting, even if I was still using the same plot.

So if you’d like to read any draft of Microcosom here’s the fourth through seventh drafts for you to peruse:
